SAY Play Celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, the SAY Detroit Play Center celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). The afternoon featured guest speakers, skill clinics led by female athletes and coaches, and a pep rally — all in celebration of SAY Play girls’ athletic achievements.

Throughout the academic year, SAY Play girls participate in soccer, track, softball, volleyball and dance/cheer. You might remember our story from a couple of years back introducing you to Rixie and Carina — two girls forged a friendship – or as they called it a sisterhood — during the SAY Play volleyball season.

Questions like “How has participating in sports influenced your confidence and leadership skills in other areas of your life?” were answered during a 5-person panel discussion led by Dana Davidson from Girls Sports Matter.

During the Month of Love, We Focused on Self Love

The SAY Detroit Family Health Clinic’s once monthly Wellness Wednesday women’s support group gathered at the Ernest T. Ford Recreation Center in Highland Park on Wednesday, Feb 19. A mediative discussion led by SAY Detroit Play Center’s director of Mental Wellness, Alan Johns, opened with “Everybody, get comfortable in your seats. We’re going to do a little exercise. Close your eyes.” And with that, participants launched into a guided practice of self-awareness and mindfulness.

Cutting Edge Robotics at SAY Play

FANUC resize 1

Earlier this month, Fanuc, one of the largest makers of industrial robots in the world, invested in the SAY Detroit Play Center by donating a Fanuc Education Grant, which includes a new robot, software, professional training for a SAY Play representative along with a curriculum for our students. And thank you to Flex-N-Gate, who introduced SAY Play to Fanuc and helped make this partnership a reality!
