Generosity in 2022 helps SAY enhance 2023 initiatives

We are extremely thankful to the more than 2,000 donors who made a gift to SAY Detroit in 2022. It is because of you, our donors and volunteers, that SAY Detroit can do so much good in the Detroit area, focusing on learning, health care, and housing. We have a lot to be thankful for this winter. Check out what some of our SAY Play students are most looking forward to!

My favorite thing about SAY Play in the winter is Robotics and Notes for Notes because we can literally make things from scratch. In robotics, right now, we are working on re-doing our robot so we can receive the “Best Improvement” award in the next competition.

Learning in The DEEP is my favorite part of SAY Play in the winter. It helps me with school.

Is anything better than being on the jumbotron?

Over the summer, the Detroit Pistons teamed up with SAY Detroit to develop an eight-week entrepreneurship program for local high schoolers at SAY Play to learn business and marketing skills. The program stemmed from a donation Pistons owner Tom Gores made during the annual Radiothon fundraiser. Two student cohorts developed a t-shirt design and a marketing plan, which were presented to a selection of judges. The winning designs were selected to be created and sold on the Pistons313Shop, and receive recognition during a Pistons game.

And that they were! The jumbotron at Little Ceasars arena showcased this video and our SAY Play students.

FIRST® Lego League Competition

The SAY Play Center Robotics team received a second-place trophy for best robotic performance at the local robotics qualifier on November 19, 2022.

Robotics is one of our longest-running programs for elementary students — this fall, seven students worked on FIRST® Lego League (FLL) teams.  Twice a week practices and robot-building were organized by an all-volunteer team of engineers from Cooper Standard and Ford. SAY students learned coding and Bluetooth connectivity.

The importance of taking care of yourself

Wednesday, January 18 was the first Wellness Wednesdays of the new year and featured Dr. Pamela Williams, medical director of the SAY Detroit Health Clinic. The monthly lunch and information session focused on building a health checklist through health screenings, check ups, a healthy diet, and more.

Wellness Wednesdays’ next program is scheduled for February 15 to discuss brain health. Read more ››
