Providing the Tools to Read

The SAY Detroit Play Center at Lipke Park is committed to providing emerging readers with the tools they need to learn how to read. Throughout March, celebrating National Reading Month, SAY Play invited special guests to read to our students in reading tutoring classes, to instill a passion for reading.

Special guests included Dan Robinson, a Detroit Police Officer, Marcel Humphrey, Systems Training Director – Global Learning & Development for Little Caesar Enterprises, Lomas Brown, former Detroit Lion and a member of SAY Detroit’s Board of Directors and Richard Kelley, our very own Executive Director of SAY Detroit. All took time to meet with students and read them a story.
On Thursday, March 20, Mitch Albom stopped by SAY Play to read with students. He was seen explaining the rhyming pattern in Dr. Seuss’s “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” and emphasizing a passage from Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
Little Caesars Love Kitchen at SAY Play

Little Caesars Love Kitchen helped SAY Play put together a festive afternoon, complete with yummy pizza on Tuesday, March 18.
Little Caesars Love Kitchen made a special trip to SAY Play to serve up slices to the students and staff! Since its inception in 1985, The Love Kitchen has served nearly 4 million people as it travels across the U.S. providing relief to the food insecure, people without housing, disaster survivors, military, and first responders.
Opening Their World with a Bike
On March 17, nearly 100 students from Davis Areospace Technical High School were gifted the power of two-wheels from SAY Detroit’s Mi-Cycle. The principal communicated with Mi-Cycle’s Chuck Nagy about the students’ need for bikes and Mi-Cycle was able to deliver. Excited students received a special SAY Detroit branded bicycle, a helmet, and a bike lock.
