J.K. Simmons gifts Detroit Tiger tickets to SAY Play

A friend of SAY Detroit, JK Simmons gifted SAY Play 20 tickets to more than 40 home Detroit Tiger games this season. Simmons, who has performed in more than 200 films and television roles throughout his career, also donated a ball cap and concessions voucher to each student.

SAY Play students were selected to use one of the game tickets by their regular attendance at SAY Play throughout the year. For many of the students, it was their first professional sporting event.

On Friday, Sept. 16, 10 SAY Play students were hosted at the game by Simmons himself!

SAY Detroit Family Health Clinic in Highland Park

clinic highlights

The SAY Clinic provides free health care to the uninsured and underinsured women and men in Detroit and Highland Park. Thank you to our donors for making this service possible.

First Year Program helps mothers set goals

The SAY Clinic launched the First Year program nearly a year ago and is proud to share that 17 women are partaking in its services and more than eight babies have been born. The initiative is not only a “pantry” of sorts, but a program developed to help identify resources and training so that mothers can be self-sufficient and babies can be healthy

A Time to Help volunteers with Angels’ Place

On Saturday, Sept. 24, A Time To Help volunteers worked alongside other volunteer groups to ensure that nonprofit Angels’ Place delivered a successful Fall Fest fundraiser for their beneficiaries, families and supporters.

Held at the Royal Oak Farmers Market, volunteers helped set up the venue before shifting to various roles, from selling 50/50 raffle tickets and managing silent auction tables, to running family-friendly games.

Fall Semester at SAY Play

Monday, Sept. 19, launched the fall semester for SAY Play. We were excited to welcome our 140 registered students. After the initial excitement, students and staff worked on creating the routines for the semester – a meal, Next Day academic assistance program, and finally, the fun activities.

Midweek, SAY Play hosted an outdoor backpack giveaway in collaboration with Perdue Farms. Perdue Farms gave 125 SAY Play students a new backpack filled with a notebook, pencil, and pencil case. Perdue also donated fresh chicken for the SAY Play meal program and in the spring of 2022 donated $10,000 to SAY Play and our after-school programming. Thank you, Perdue!

Mi-Cycle Employee Highlight

We asked Lee McNeil, stellar employee at our Mi-Cycle workshop and Marine Corp. veteran, what he liked best about working with SAY Detroit: “Being able to make a living and give back to the community. The service side is really gratifying. That’s what makes this one of the best jobs I’ve ever had.”

Formerly a resident of the Michigan Veterans Foundation, one of our longtime community partners, Lee has since been able to move in to his own place!

THANK YOU LEE!
