Health Care & Healthy Living

Mi-Cycle

Our bicycle shop accepts and repairs used bicycles, and then distributes them to Detroiters in need in targeted giveaways. In 2025, Mi-Cycle distributed 975 bikes to the community.

Affordable, sustainable, and independent transportation promotes healthy living for children and adults!

The pandemic exposed a number of inequalities, and one of them is access to transportation —  for school, work, medical care, physical recreation, and other activities. SAY Detroit launched Mi-Cycle in 2021 with program director Chuck Nagy to address this major challenge for underserved communities, pursue a green approach, and dispel the myths about who is and who isn’t interested in cycling culture and building bicycle-friendly cities.

Lives and communities transformed by bicycles

As with many of SAY Detroit’s efforts, the approach is multi-pronged:

  • School partnerships, like the Bicycle Mechanics Club at the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy, improve attendance and teach mechanics
  • Bike repair shop provides employment and economic opportunity to veterans and at-risk citizens transitioning into stable housing
  • Increases access to bicycles, safety gear, and basic tune-up knowledge to those who are often left out
  • Donors looking to give their old bicycles a new life for someone else can drop them off at the repair shop and occasional drop-off events
  • Supporters who want to expand the cycling world to more people in Detroit can donate to fund the rehabilitation and distribution of a bicycle to future riders in underserved communities
  • Drop off your used bicycle

    Request a bicycle

While bikes are primarily distributed through targeted giveaways through schools and other partners, community members in need of a bike may contact Chuck at chuck@saydetroit.org to make a request. Please note:

  • Inventory will vary based on donations
  • Recipients are asked to undergo basic maintenance training when they pick up their refurbished bicycle from the repair shop
  • Whenever possible through donations, safety and security gear such as bicycle lights may also be provided (if available)
