FERNDALE, MI — Volunteerism is about making a difference, and that certainly was the case Saturday.

Nearly two dozen A Time to Help volunteers took on the task of cleaning and organizing the warehouse and operations space that hosts Brown Bag Popcorn, the profits of which benefit the nonprofit programming of SAY Detroit.

The biggest challenge for the group was moving piles of equipment that had previously been held in storage and reconfiguring the area to make the best use of the space. There was also two separate cleaning projects, from scrubbing the bathroom and employee break-out room to polishing stainless steel appliances, and more.

Midway through the project, SAY Detroit founder Mitch Albom lent a hand and thanked the volunteers for their service. Rick Kelley, the nonprofit’s executive director, kicked off the morning.

For Rochester Hills resident Keith Cullinan, the monthly ATTH projects affords him the opportunity to do something positive for others, with the added bonus of spending time with his dad, Bob Cullinan, a longtime charity volunteer.

“I probably did my first project at least 10 years ago,’’ Keith Cullinan said. “The one I remember the most is the painting project we did at a shelter. Volunteering is a good way to make a difference in the community.
