Nearly $400K to be Given Away by S.A.Y. Detroit Radiothon Funds

DETROIT – Ten Detroit charities and their projects – ranging from homes for the homeless to after school music classes – will reap benefits from the funds raised last December by “Mitch Albom’s S.A.Y. (Super All Year) Detroit Radiothon.” Checks will be handed to each of the ten charities’ representatives at a ceremony this Wednesday, March 26, 10 a.m. at the WJR Radio studios in the Fisher Building on West Grand Blvd.

Nearly $400,000 in donations from Detroit citizens and companies was raised last December at Albom’s second annual “Radiothon” held at Somerset Collection North in Troy. As a result, each of the following will receive a chunk of the proceeds:

Life-Saving Dental Care at S.A.Y. Detroit Family Health Clinic

The S.A.Y. Detroit Family Health Clinic continues to expand offerings to serve the underserved through a new alliance with the recently-formed, community-based dental team from Covenant Community Care. Students from the University of Detroit Dental School, under the direction of Dr. Heidi Hudson, the director of the community based team, are reaching out to serve those with limited or no access to dental care.

Volunteers Needed at S.A.Y. Detroit Clinic

The S.A.Y. Detroit Family Health Clinic needs dedicated volunteer physicians and nurse practitioners (NP) to help us fulfill the mission of providing FREE healthcare to underserved women and children in the Detroit area. The Clinic currently sees close to 7,000 patients a year who are in desperate need of healthcare.

Dr. Phil Visits the S.A.Y. Detroit Clinic

On Thursday, April 2nd, Dr. Phil McGraw made a visit to the S.A.Y. Detroit Family Health clinic in Detroit. Mitch Albom gave him a tour of the facility which was opened last December. McGraw visited with patients and doctors and staff and was so impressed, he vowed a $25,000 gift from his foundation before he left. The clinic is the nation’s only 24 hour/7 day a week facility dedicated to homeless children and their mothers. McGraw’s gift will be used to purchase supplies and equipment to help future patients. Albom Charity Funds S.A.Y. Detroit Family Health Clinic

On Wednesday. December 17, 2008, S.A.Y. Detroit, the organization formed by Mitch Albom to aid the homeless in Detroit, and the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries opened the first ever free medical clinic devoted entirely to homeless children and their mothers. Open 24/7, the clinic will provide maintenance and preventive healthcare, including immunizations, diabetes screening, and blood pressure testing, and with special attention to their most common health problems. The clinic will operate with a staff of nurse practitioners and on-call physicians including a pediatrics specialist, OB/GYN specialist, and a nutritionist. Offering a wide range of health services, the clinic will accept walk-ins and run a pick-up service at several Detroit shelters.
