Shirley Love and her husband Montez Wilkerson of Bessemore received the keys to their new home earlier today after a fire destroyed their previous home and took the life of the their three-year-old great nephew. Since the fire nearly three months ago, the Love-Wilkerson’s had been staying with relatives, unsure when they would get back on their feet.
Through the Working Homes/Working Families program, a joint operation between S.A.Y. Detroit and the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, the Love-Wilkerson’s are getting a hand up on getting a fresh start.
“The one thing we have a good deal of in Detroit are available homes, so as long as the city makes it fairly easy to work with and we can refurbish them, we shouldn’t have families out on the street when we have this many empty houses that can be re-worked,” Mitch Albom, founder of S.A.Y. Detroit, told Fox 2 News.
