For 15 years….
You’ve volunteered, scrubbed floors and painted walls,
You’ve planted trees and boxed up food,
You’ve torn down crumbling walls.
But now’s the time to take a break and ponder what you’ve done,
It’s party time for A Time to Help, so please enjoy some fun!

100 Houses Beautifies Brightmoor
More than 300 volunteers, including A Time to Help‘s monthly volunteers, convened on Saturday, August 10 to help seed over 500 vacant lots with wildflowers in 100 Houses’ third event. Partnering with Bill Pulte’s Detroit Blight Authority, the project was part of Pulte’s five-step plan to take a “bite out of blight.” In early June, Pulte and the DBA began removing blighted structures, debris, trash and brush. Wearing neon T-shirts, the volunteers were divided into teams of 30 to help seed the lots, which span 14 city blocks.
S.A.Y. Detroit Pays Special Visit to Bethune
On Monday, July 22, 2013, Bethune Elementary and Middle School received a $10,000 donation from Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM) and its partner, S.A.Y. Detroit. The purpose of the donation was to ensure that Bethune’s 840 students had a new school uniform to wear for the 2013-2014 school year. Bethune adopted uniforms the year before to encourage discipline and increase attendance. Unfortunately, the switch had the opposite effect: many of the children could not afford to buy them, and attendance dropped dramatically. The donation was announced at an all-school assembly later that day. “It’s through the generosity of our donors that we are able to…provide school uniforms for these children,” said Dr. Chad Audi, President of DRMM.
100 Houses to Host Third Event in August
On August 10, 2013, the One Hundred Houses army will convene for a third time. This year, Mitch Albom and the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries will be collaborating with residential builder Bill Pulte and his organization, the Detroit Blight Authority. Together the organizations will beautify over 500 vacant lots in the city’s Brightmoor neighborhood. The project is part of Pulte’s five-step plan to take a “bite out of blight” and will be one of the many efforts to remove blight in the area. In early June, Pulte and the DBA began removing blighted structures, debris, trash and brush. Over two hundred volunteers will be divided into teams of 30 to help seed the lots, which span 14 city blocks, with wildflowers.
