Created out of a love of a sister, Dutton Farm is building opportunity and acceptance right here in the heart of Detroit.
Air Date: May 31, 2018
Jenny Brown grew up in a tight knit family but it was her sister Becca that started Jenny on a new path.
Jenny: My oldest sister has the gift of Downs Syndrome, she didn’t have the same opportunities and she didn’t have the same acceptance as I had as an adult and so that is what inspired me to really start this organization.
Dutton Farm is a life and job skills program for individuals with special needs, where each of their “Farmers” learn to build strong work skills.
Jenny: We build a relationship find out where their skill sets are and then we help them walk through our skill building program, job training and then the end game is to be able to get them a competitive integrated job in the community.
Many of the “Farmers” successfully move onto work in food service, retail and custodial sciences. But this newfound success begins with finding the right fit.
Jenny: Finding the right employer finding the right job coach and making sure that individual is set up for success.
Mitch: What do you know that employers who quickly dismiss people in these communities are yet to know?
Jenny: They don’t know the people themselves they don’t know the beauty and the ability in the individuals themselves. The appreciation that they have for being able to work and have a purpose and being needed is incredible. These individuals are the most pure hearted funny, I mean heart on their sleeve, no filter, it’s just a blast every day.
