In yesterday’s event, A Time to Help volunteers partnered with DTE Energy Gardens in Allen Park, MI to put in tomato stakes, plant early season crops, spread compost, and set up walkways.
The DTE Energy Gardens Project is a joint venture between DTE Energy, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan (Gleaners) and many volunteers in our community. In 2011, the project included 10 community gardens that covered a total area of approximately 3.2 acres and produced more than 44,600 pounds of food for Gleaners to distribute to people in need in Southeastern Michigan. Your participation will enable another person at a homeless shelter, food bank, or food pantry to eat locally grown fresh produce. Enjoy the sounds of nature. Feel the summer breeze. Teach a child about caring for a plant. Pick fresh produce. Water and care for the plants that are making people healthy. There are community gardens in Macomb County (Washington Township), Monroe County (Frenchtown Township), Oakland County (Birmingham, Farmington Hills, Lyon Township, Pontiac, Southfield), and Wayne County (Allen Park, Plymouth Township and Westland).
