$1 Million in Radiothon Funds Distributed to 20 Charities

Representatives from 20 area charities accepted checks totaling more than $1 million on Tuesday from donations raised at Mitch Albom’s fifth annual SAY Detroit Radiothon last December.

The ceremony at the Fisher Building included several first-time beneficiaries, including the Bing Youth Institute — a mentoring program for urban youth created by former Detroit Mayor and NBA legend Dave Bing.

Albom, who founded SAY Detroit in 2006, presented the checks to the benefiting charities with Dr. Chad Audi, president of the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, along with representatives of several major donor organizations.

DETROIT — A day after he was awarded a house during Mitch Albom’s S.A.Y. Detroit Radiothon, retired U.S. Army veteran Leo Cooke was overwhelmed with emotion when he stepped into his new home Friday for the first time.

“When I walked in, it was amazing,” said Cooke, wiping tears from his eyes. “Words can’t describe how I feel right now. Lord, I can’t believe this is happening.”

Broadcast live from The Somerset Collection in Troy, MI on December 10th, the fourth annual S.A.Y. Detroit Radiothon surpassed all previous fundraising records to collect more than $1 million to help Detroit’s neediest citizens. Hosted by Mitch Albom, S.A.Y. Detroit’s founder, the fifteen-hour broadcast aired live on WJR 760 AM with video streaming on several media outlets including wjr.com, WDIV’s clickondetroit.com, freep.com and at saydetroit.org.

Detroit, Michigan – April 15– More than a dozen local charities were grateful recipients of $825,000, funds raised from the Third Annual SAY Detroit Radiothon held last December. Representatives from several major donor organizations and the recipient charities gathered on  the 7th floor of the Fisher Building to celebrate what is for S.A.Y.
