HIGHLAND PARK, MI. – The monthly theme of the SAY Detroit Family Health Clinic’s Wellness Wednesdays’ women’s support group rarely strays from the focus and intention of each session – it’s always all about wellness.
For certain, wellness took center stage at the start of the August 21st event, when the group celebrated the 98th birthday of one of the program’s regular senior participants. Affectionately known as “Miss Clara,’’ Clara Rich said her key to longevity has been living a committed life of service.
“I extend myself beyond myself for others,’’ Clara said after she danced and sang with members of the group at the Ernest T. Ford Recreation Center. “All my life I’ve been a helper and a server. I come from a family who taught me this. That makes me happy.’’
Alexis Harvey, SAY Clinic community health worker and lead facilitator of the monthly program, said that happiness plays a large role in all aspects of your life.
There are eight dimensions of health,’’ said Harvey, listing them as spiritual, social, physical, educational, financial, emotional, intellectual and environmental. “These women do a lot of sharing, and they know when they come (to Wellness Wednesdays) they’re in a shared community. They receive guidance and form new friendships – it’s about their health and happiness.’’
