Hostel Detroit is the first and only hostel in our town that offers travelers from around the world a low cost, clean place to stay right in the middle of Detroit.
Zach: It’s an old four unit apartment building it was built in 1915 it was opened as a chocolate shop and three years ago we actually purchased the building and we are located right in north Corktown and all the money that we do take in from Hostel revenue goes right back into the building and we’ve been fixing it up over time and it is gets nicer every year.
Mitch: And is it hostel like in the European hostel version a lot of bunk beds?
Zach: Yeah yeah so we’ve got two ten bed dorms two four bed dorms and a bunch of private rooms. We’re offering like a low cost affordable safe clean place to stay.
They have hosted over 15,000 people from 80 different countries but what makes Hostel Detroit unique is their commitment to educating their visitors about the city of Detroit.
Samantha: We started a program called the Ambassador Program and the idea of that was to kind of link visitors coming in from all over the world with different interests, urban planning or the music scene in Detroit and since we’re a non-profit the tour is free of charge we just want people to come in learn about Detroit and take that back to wherever they are coming from.
Allowing visitors to embrace all that is positive about the city is what Hostel Detroit does best.
Zach: One of my favorite things to do is when someone comes in with maybe some sort of perception that you know Detroit is not safe or it’s not a good place to be we’re able to flip that on its head so easily people are constantly coming to tell me coming to Detroit staying at the hostel is one of the best travel experiences I have ever had in my life.
Hostel Detroit is connecting the travelers of the world to the city we love right here in the heart of Detroit.
