Two days before Christmas, Lillie Taylor and her three children received a gift that she hopes will last a lifetime: A place to call home.
Taylor smiled broadly on Friday as she received the keys to a newly refurbished house in the Morningside neighborhood on Detroit’s east side from Kisha Woods, director of Genesis House 2 at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, as part of S.A.Y. Detroit’s Working Homes/Working Families charity.
Each door that was opened brought its own special surprise. Mia Branch couldn’t believe it.
Slide over the high chair in the kitchen, and Branch was already envisioning herself and her nine children having a family dinner around the dining room table.
In the expansive living area upstairs, Branch was awestruck to see a bedroom large enough for her four girls to share. On the same floor, there was room for the kids to do their homework after school, and, just around the counter, a room dedicated for prayer and reflection. She couldn’t believe it.
DETROIT — A day after he was awarded a house during Mitch Albom’s S.A.Y. Detroit Radiothon, retired U.S. Army veteran Leo Cooke was overwhelmed with emotion when he stepped into his new home Friday for the first time.
“When I walked in, it was amazing,” said Cooke, wiping tears from his eyes. “Words can’t describe how I feel right now. Lord, I can’t believe this is happening.”
Detroit – Ezell Robinson called it “a double blessing.”
On Tuesday, the 55-year-old U.S. Army veteran stood in front of a new neighborhood playground and urban garden that was spearheaded by the same charity initiative that gave Robinson and his two children a home across the street six months ago.
Shirley Love and her husband Montez Wilkerson of Bessemore received the keys to their new home earlier today after a fire destroyed their previous home and took the life of the their three-year-old great nephew. Since the fire nearly three months ago, the Love-Wilkerson’s had been staying with relatives, unsure when they would get back on their feet.
Through the Working Homes/Working Families program, a joint operation between S.A.Y. Detroit and the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries, the Love-Wilkerson’s are getting a hand up on getting a fresh start.
As has become tradition during each annual S.A.Y. Detroit Radiothon, three deserving families received the keys to their new homes through the Working Homes/Working Families program. The idea of Working Homes/Working Families is simple. Detroit has too many abandoned houses. It also has too many families who lack a decent place to live.
