Wellness Wednesdays Attendees Explore Legacy Planning

January 15, 2025

Sometimes discussions are informational, other times they’re simply needed.

Today’s Wellness Wednesdays women’s support group and luncheon at the Ernest T. Ford Recreation Center was a lot of both, thanks mostly to attorney Ameena Sheikh’s straightforward and uncomplicated presentation.

Sheikh is co-founder of Ladies in Law, a Detroit-based estate planning firm that strives to make estate planning and asset protection accessible and attainable for everyday families.

For about 40 minutes, Sheikh spoke to the group about the important process of making decisions about how your assets will be distributed after your death, as well as how to manage your affairs if you become incapacitated.

“Estate planning is the best way to build generational wealth,’’ Sheikh said. “You want to have complete control when you’re no longer here.’’

Among the benefits of a trust, she said, is helping to ensure that your assets avoid probate court, as well as setting up specific conditions and parameters for receiving your assets.

Alexis Harvey, Wellness Wednesday’s program director, said the session was so well-received that she asked Sheikh to return and meet the group again in the coming months.

“Estate planning is something that’s way too important to say, ‘Well, I’ll deal with that later,’’’ Harvey said. “The time to deal with it is now.’’

Wellness Wednesdays’ next session is Feb. 19 at the Ford Rec Center. Registration is required – and limited. Please call 586-345-0225 to reserve your spot.
